AN expert has predicted Bolton becoming a city would bring both “buzz and business” to the borough.
Dr Steve Musson, a lecturer in human geography at the University of Reading, believes the relatively low cost of submitting a bid means it makes sound economic sense for Bolton to apply to become a city.
He said: “Does Bolton’s bid make sense? In short, yes.
“The simple bidding process means it won’t cost much. The economic benefits of becoming a city are not clear, but there are at least two reasons to try.
“The first is about the buzz a bid might create.
“It could bring business, government and community groups together, generating enthusiasm and new ideas along the way.
“The second is about the way towns and cities compete for business and government investment. Would Bolton be at a disadvantage if it wasn’t ambitious or forward thinking?
“If the town doesn’t bid, we may find out.”
Aside from Bolton, as many as 14 other towns are expected to bid for city status, which is being granted by the Queen to mark her Diamond Jubilee next year.
