BRENDAN O'FARRELL of 14 Brighton Road, Birkdale, Southport, Merseyside, PR8 4DD, says: There lived in Bolton a young man called Frederick Farrar Bromley.

In 1918 he was a Second Lieut. in the Tank Corps, and was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallentry and good leadership during an attack.seeing the enemy escape beyond the barrage. He drove his tank through the barrage and inflicted severe loss on them.

Later in co-operation with another tank, he attacked a field gun in the open causing it to surrender, and captured over 200 Germans.

He did splendid work.

Fred was the eldest son of P Bromley of "The Oldhams "Sharples, and was a director of Messrs T Bromley and Son Ltd, Fine Art Gallery, Bradshawgate.

He joined the Public Schools Batt., and went out in 1915 working his way up from private to his present rank.

He was twice wounded, and was with the tanks that went through the German lines in August.

Fred was a member of Dunscar Golf Club, and played football for Sharples FC.

Fred was related to my wife Janice, he died in 1957.

If anyone may have known him, or heard of Sharples FC, perhaps some golfers may have played a round or two with him, we would dearly love more information and perhaps a photo.
