PETER Kay's famous garlic bread joke has been voted the greatest television one-liner of all time.

The line, which the Bolton comedian, also uses in his stand-up shows, is delivered by his character Brian Potter in Phoenix nights, who says: "Garlic bread! It's the future, I've tasted it."

In second place was a line from the Mrs Merton Show starring Caroline Aherne, who famously asked Debbie McGee: "So, what first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?"

Ricky Gervais' character in The Office, David Brent, came in at third place with: "If you were to ask me to name three geniuses, I probably wouldn't say Einstein, Newton. . . I'd go Milligan, Cleese, Everett and Sessions."

Other programmes to feature in the top 50 include Fawlty Towers, The Vicar of Dibley, Only Fools and Horses, I'm Alan Partridge and Blackadder.

UKTV Gold viewers were asked to choose their favourite one-liners from a shortlist of 50 picked from British comedy shows, past and present.
