DANGEROUS drivers, according to current legislation, are guilty if the way they drive falls below what would be expected of a competent and careful driver and if it would be obvious to a competent and careful driver that driving would be dangerous.
There are two dangerous driving offences — causing death by dangerous driving and dangerous driving.
The maximum penalty for causing death by dangerous driving is a 14 year jail-term.
Other sentencing options include an unlimited fine, a minimum twoyear driving ban and penalty points.
For dangerous driving, the maximum penalty is two years imprisonment, with an unlimited fine, a disqualification and penalty points.
