Tom Lancashire finished a disappointing 10th in the final of the European Championships 1500m in Barcelona on Friday night.
The Bolton man went into the race ranked second in Europe and a medal hope.
But the slow pace did not suit him and he took charge of the race with 500m to go in a bid to give himself a chance.
It was a brave move as he hit the front and set a hot pace, stretching out the field with a blistering last lap.
But his lack of a finishing sprint was exposed as he was overtaken by a number of athletes on the home straight.
