TENNIS: The top four seeds reached the semi-finals of the Under-18s boys singles in the BSF Tennis Championships tonight – and they produced some real entertainment.
Top seed Sachin Govind played Charlie Foley (3) and won the first set 6-3 but his opponent found an extra gear to take the last two sets 6-4, 6-1 and book his place in Saturday’s final.
He will play John Halton, who took on second seed Alec Foote. In what was a superb match Halton, winner of this event for the last three years, reached his fourth consecutive final with a 7-6, 6-3 victory.
In the men’s doubles, top seed and defending champions Nick Hinnighan and Johnny Davies met Martin Robinson and Martin Bromley. Hinnighan and Davies won 6-3, 6-4, showing that, on occasion, experience cannot take away an age disadvantage.
On Wednesday night, a mixed match of high quality saw Lostock’s Sam Stuart and Yasmin Bennison lose 7-5, 6-3 to fourth seeds Gareth Davies and Natalie Freeguard from Hawkshaw.
On an adjacent court, second seeds John Lister and John Halton came from a set down to beat Leigh’s father and son pairing Andy and Tom Johnson.
