Number one men’s seed, John Lister, dropped his first games in this year’s Bolton Tennis Tournament in a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Steve Darlington who was made to work hard for his four games.
Number two seed Tom Johnson was pushed by David Lloyd’s Peter Simcik. At 1-1, both with a 6-4 scoreline, the unfortunate Simcek suffered a leg injury. He carried on gamely but could not prevent Johnson taking the deciding set 6-0.
A shock result late on Monday saw reigning mixed champions and number one seeds, Phil Rimmer and Lisa Cartwright, crash out to Nick Hinnighan and Louise Taylor in their first match of the tournament.
In the handicap ladies veterans semi-finals, Kate Whittle and Chris Deacon beat Julia Bennison and Sue Francis 6-5, 6-3.
They will play Kath Taylor and Gill Pearl who overcame fellow Lostock pair, Margaret Pyatt and Marilyn Sweet, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, despite having a two-point handicap.
The girls under-18s singles is another event already through to the final. Annabel Rowlands will play Eleanor Kelly who beat Bradshaw’s Rebecca Taylor 6-2, 6-0.
In the men’s doubles the unseeded Martin Robinson and Martin Bromley ran out comfortable 6-0, 6-3 winners against Gareth Cole and Stuart Cartwright and will face number three seeds Gary Hainsworth and Mike Greene at 8pm tonight.
