ROUNDERS: Bolton Juniors overcame a major handicap to gain revenge over Bury in their inter-league return clash at Elton Vale on Friday night.
Looking to make up for a 299-271 defeat earlier in the season, the Bolton girls got off to a promising start when they dismissed the home side for just 83 runs in their first innings, mainly due to a brave bowling performance by Cody Brooks, who had been injured in a car crash on the way to the match.
She later needed hospital treatment and had to be substituted Nevertheless, Bolton batted superbly to post a first innings total of 130 thanks to sterling efforts by Melissa Dargan (21), Nicola Mitchell-Yorke (22) and top scorer Jenny Fairclough (39).
The big question was how they would cope without their top bowler? But Bolton responded magnificently with Nicola Mitchell Yorke taking up where Brook lefts off to dismiss Bury for 81.
All Bolton had to do was keep their cool, which they did with Melissa Dargan (13) top-scoring to give the visitors a winning margin of 194-164.
Bolton’s Golden Girls suffered a 326-255 defeat at the hands of their local rivals in the Over-60s inter-league match on Sunday morning.
Bury batted magnificently, scoring 164 in their first innings, with Sandra Rothwell hitting 36, Judith Williams 32 and Val Pierce 27.
Bolton reached a respectable 135 in reply with Jean Jones top-scoring with 23 and Eunice Gudojc contributing 19.
Bury were just as formidable in their second innings, scoring a further 162, and once again Rothwell was a major player, scoring a firther 36 for a match total of 72.
Pam Gibbs scored 29 but it was Lynn Jackson who took the batting honours with an amazing 45.
A winning target of 192 was a big ask but Bolton played out the game in good spirits, hitting 120 in their second innings.
