THERE were a number of shocks in the first round of the BSF Tennis Tournament mens singles at Bolton School over the weekend.

Lostock’s Adam Francis surprised Bradshaw’s Stuart Cartwright with a 6-3, 6-3 victory, while the fifth and seventh seeds also crashed out.

Number five seed Paul Skinner was crushed 6-0, 6-0 by an in-form Sam Stuart and seventh seed Chris Walker lost 6-1, 6-3, to Steve Darlington ,who as last year beat a seeded player.

Eighth seed John Chatterley beat the dangerous Richard Lane 7-6, 6-3 but then went out of the doubles with partner Karl Morrow losing in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Lewis Newton and James Moores.

Third seed Gary Hainsworth had to fight hard against Ian Hodkinson, but won in three hard fought sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Once again handicapped events were in the main close affairs and a typically hard-fought match saw Walmer’s Richard Morley and Mark Booth beat 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 by Eagley’s father and son pairing Mark and Ben Pearson.

Third seed Gary Hainsworth, appeared comfortable after winning the first set against Gary Maguire 6-2 but was pushed all the way in the second set before taking it 7-5.

The junior under 18 boys got under way with top seed Sachin Govind pushed by Lostock’s Ewan Smith but eventually won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
