Robin Bird of 9 Winton Close, Wallasey, CH45 9NA, writes: I am trying to trace relatives of Aircraftman Raymond Cockburn, aged 22, who was buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Bolton, following a mysterious Sunderland flyingboat crash in the Second World War.
Raymond was aboard prototype Sunderland W3769 undergoing night trials on November 28,1941, with a secret wing of the RAF, known as the Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment.
His was the only body recovered.
I may have information of interest to Raymond's family which i discovered during research into MAEE Helensburgh, where my late father also served.
