CHUNG-Yong Lee and Danny Shittu are set to make history when they become the first Wanderers players to face each other in the World Cup finals.
Lee’s South Korea take on Shittu’s Nigeria in Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban in tonight’s vital Group B clash.
Winger Lee became only the third Bolton player – after Nat Lofthouse and Radhi Jaidi – to score at a World Cup when he struck against Argentina.
And the 21-year-old star will write his name in Wanderers’ record books again when he lines up against Shittu, knowing victory will guarantee his country place in the last 16.
Nigeria, meanwhile, need three points to have any chance of qualifying for the next phase. Lars Lagerback’s side need Argentina to hammer Greece in the other Group B fixture to be played at the same time.
Shittu has played both games for the Super Eagles in South Africa despite not making a single appearance for Wanderers last season and being told he can leave the Reebok.
The 29-year-old defender has called for his country to keep their World Cup dream alive after their disappointing 2-1 defeat against the Greeks.
“This is the time when we need to show the strength in our character and we must win the next game,” said Shittu.
“We have to go out there and score goals and keep clean sheets and that is what we are going to be looking to do against Korea.
“It’s a game that we must win and we do still believe we can win.”
l Ten other Wanderers players have been selected for their country’s World Cup squads in the past. They are: Tommy Banks, Eddy Hopkinson, Nat Lofthouse, Jason McAteer, Stig Tofting, Per Frandsen, Youri Djorkaeff, Radhi Jaidi, Hidetoshi Nakata and Stuart Holden.
