CHUNG-YONG Lee scored a memorable hat-trick as he swept the board at Wanderers’ end-of-season awards ceremony at the Reebok last night.
The South Korea star picked up the three major awards at Wanderers end-of-season event, completing a momentous first season in English football. Chung-Yong scooped trophies for Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Best Newcomer, just eight months after arriving at the club as a relative unknown from FC Seoul.
The 21-year-old winger helped the Whites finish off in style yesterday, making a second-half cameo from the bench in a 2-1 victory that ensured a 14th-place finish.
Leading the tributes was skipper Kevin Davies, who said his team-mate had far exceeded any realistic expectations in his first campaign.
“He’s had a great season,” he told The Bolton News. “To have come here from Korea and settled in as quickly as he did is excellent.
“He’s got the skills, the workrate, and he’s got a lot stronger too as the season has gone on. I think he’s been a fantastic signing for us.
“It has been a long season for him and now he’s heading to the World Cup – but I can’t speak highly enough of him.”
Our readers selected Fabrice Muamba as the recipient of The Bolton News Player of the Year award in a season in which the combative midfielder played in every Premier League game and scored his first goal for the club.
Davies picked up the golden boot after his goal against Birmingham took him to nine for the season – one ahead of Matt Taylor and Ivan Klasnic.
And the 2-1 victory over West Ham at Upton Park in February was picked out by chairman Phil Gartside as the club’s best performance of the season.
