A TEENAGE indie band from Bolton named Asbo after the mum of one of them said that's what they would get if they didn't stop making such a racket while practising in a garage, is to play at one of Manchester's most prestigious venues.
Asbo, who are all aged just 16 to 19, auditioned this week in front of a music industry panel including BBC radio DJ Marc Riley, Doves' manager Dave Rofe, Sam Walker from Key 103, Rob O'Shea from Sheffield Arena and musician Mandy Wigby (formerly in Justin Robertson's Lionrock).
The judges loved them and their provocative name and now they will play the 2,300 capacity The Bridgewater Hall on Wednesday, July 5,at a night called Transmission, which is part of the Step Up festival.
The band, who all live in Kearsley and Farnworth, will support Manchester heroes Daywalkers and Polytechnic, along with four other young bands from the North-west.
Hundreds of bands sent in demos, nine auditioned live and Asbo were one the five chosen to go on and perform at The Bridgewater Hall a venue that has seen rock legends Lou Reed and Nick Cave perform over the last few months.
Asbo got their name when they were practising in Jordan's mum's garage in Kearsley and she came in and told them they would get an Asbo if they didn't stop making such a noise.
The four members of the band, who cite Manchester's Stone Roses, Ride and Radiohead amongst their influences, are Mitchell Holmes, 16, singer, Jordan Summerfield, 17, bass, Dean Glover, 17, guitar and Ben Robinson, 19, drums.
The gig is part of the Step Up schools' arts festival, which is taking place at venues around Manchester and Liverpool from July 1-9 and also includes the massive free Step Up Art Show at Museum of Science & Industry, film showings on BBC Big Screens, Manchester's Cornerhouse and Liverpool's FACT and other music and dance events at The Bridgewater Hall.
Headliner Polytechnic has recorded sessions for both Radio One and BBC 6music and has supported everyone from The Breeders, to Doves and The Strokes.
Daywalkers is the band of Drum & Bass MC and producer Tonn Piper and describe their sounds as crossing the boundaries of punk, metal, hip hop and drum & bass.
Tickets are £6.50 (£4 under 18s) from The Bridgewater Hall box office on T: 0161 907 9000 or you can pay on the night. Doors 5.30pm, 10pm finish.
