THE grief-stricken family of a mum who was killed in a hit and run accident have made an emotional appeal to the driver: "Give yourself up."

Laura Entwistle, aged 44, was just yards from her front door when she was hit by a car near the Rumworth pub in Wigan Road, Deane, at 3am on Saturday morning.

Police said the motorist was travelling 'extremely fast' as they stepped up their inquiry into the incident.

Witnesses have been unable to give a description of the driver because the car was moving at such speed.

Mrs Entwistle, a mother-of-two who worked as a chambermaid at the Holiday Inn in Beaumont Road, was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

She had spent Friday evening in the Rumworth pub with friends and one of her sons and had stayed late because she was chatting with the landlady. Mrs Entwistle was using the pelican crossing near to her home when she was struck by the car.

Bob Entwistle, aged 48, her estranged husband and father of her two sons, Rob, aged 20, and Aaron, aged 17, paid tribute to a 'popular and well liked lady'.

Mr Entwistle, of Addington Road, Deane, said: "Laura was a diamond. We got together when we were teenagers and even though we'd been apart for two years, we were still good friends.

"This has destroyed our family. None of us can believe what's happened. Robert and Aaron are distraught.

"We just want whoever's responsible for doing this to be found. If they've got any decency, any sort of conscience at all, they'll come forward now."

Dozens of floral tributes and sympathy cards from family and friends have been left tied to railings near to the pedestrian crossing where Mrs Entwistle died.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

Det Insp Sara Wallwork of Astley Bridge CID, said: "This was a tragic incident and we are appealing to anyone who may have seen the collision or has any information about the driver of the car to come forward and speak to us.

"We do not have a very good description of the car as it was travelling extremely fast, but we are looking for a car that would have extensive damage to the front. It is also likely to have a smashed windscreen.

"I would particularly appeal to any scrapyards or car fitters, who may be approached to fix a car of this description to contact us immediately."

Anyone with any information about it, is asked to contact CID at Astley Bridge on 0161 856 5740.
