A BUNGLING criminal with 26 convictions lied to police about why his blood was found at a burgled house.

Heroin user and heavy drinker Shaun Lowe said his blood was found on the front door because a friend tripped him up when they were playing a game of night-time football - and his knee smashed a glass panel.

Police matched the blood to Lowe, who has 72 offences on his criminal record.

But during his interview, he insisted he was retrieving the ball when the 'accident' happened.

Bolton magistrates court, Lowe pleaded guilty to breaking into the house in Piggott Street, Farnworth, last October.

Lowe, aged 35, unemployed, of Malcolm Avenue, Clifton, also pleaded guilty to breaking into a Proton car in November when he again cut himself leaving blood for police to match.

He smashed a side window of the car, which was parked in Gerrard Street, Kearsley, but found nothing in it.

Lowe, who is due to have a biopsy on his kidneys and liver next week because of his drink problem, was also caught shoplifting the day before.

Lowe also pleaded guilty to failing to surrender to a police station last week. His case was adjourned for reports until next Friday.

Lowe's solicitor, Craige Parkinson, told the magistrates he was desperate to beat his drug and booze problems and needed to be bailed to prove he was serious about improving his life.

"He can't be true to his word if he is remanded to custody," said Mr Parkinson.

"Mr Lowe says he wants to sort out his problems and he has a substantial motive for doing so - his worsening health.

"While in custody so far he has asked for a referral to the drugs team and is anxious to get help."

Terry Doherty, chairman of the bench, allowed Lowe bail on condition he lives in Malcolm Avenue at his sister's home, reports to the police three times a week, stays at home between 9pm and 7am, and co-operates with the drugs team.
