AN 18-YEAR-OLD youth has been arrested on suspicion of causing the death of a mother of two in a hit-and-run accident.
Laura Entwistle, aged 44, of Wigan Road, Deane, was knocked down yards from her home in the early hours of last Saturday.
Detectives arrested the youth, who is from Daubhill, on Thursday morning on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was still being questioned on Friday.
Mrs Entwistle had been enjoying a night out in the Rumworth pub in Wigan Road, Deane, and was on her way home when she was hit by a car shortly before 3am.
The car was being driven at speed and did not stop.
Mrs Entwistle, a hotel chamber maid, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Royal Bolton Hospital.
A stolen Rover 200 was found burnt out in Farnworth on Saturday morning and the car is undergoing forensic examination to see if it was involved in the accident.
Det Insp Paul Hitchen, of Bolton CID, said: "As part of our investigations, we are working with motorcycle officers from the Road Policing Unit.
"They will be checking all Rover cars in the Deane area that match the profile we have obtained through forensic work.
"We are also examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area."
Tests have so far shown the car was probably a Rover 200 or 400 series built between 1989 and 1996 and bearing a registration between F and P.
Detectives are still appealing for anyone with information about the collision to come forward.
They have made numerous appeals for witnesses since the accident but, so far, the response has been limited.
Mrs Entwistle's eldest son Rob, aged 20, also made a heartfelt plea for anyone with information to contact the police.
Mrs Entwistle also had a second son, Aaron, aged 17.
"She was amazing," he said. "The best mum anyone could ever have."
Det Insp Hitchen said: "An 18-year-old man from Bolton has been arrested. He is due to be interviewed by detectives.
"Our inquiries are ongoing and we would still urge anyone with information about the accident or the car involved to contact us immediately."
Anyone who has any information should contact Astley Bridge CID on 0161 856 5740 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
