A MOTHER has appealed to the consciences of thieves who stole her son's new bicycle just hours before he celebrated his 12th birthday.
Mrs Cara Smith is hoping the BMX Mongoose Expert can be returned to her home in Deyne Avenue, Prestwich, and no questions will be asked.
The distinctive bright green bike, which is a limited edition worth £270, was locked up in the front garden of Mrs Smith's home when it was stolen. When Mrs Smith went to bed around 10.30pm on Friday, the bike was secure.
However, when the family woke on Saturday to celebrate son Steven's birthday they discovered it had gone.
Mrs Smith said: "We bought Steven the bike for Christmas as his main present.
"Last summer he had saved up his own money and bought a secondhand one as he relies on a bike to get to school.
"We thought that his actions deserved a special treat so bought him a brand new bike for Christmas.
"For that to be stolen on his birthday was just devastating for him. He was heartbroken."
Mrs Smith has reported the theft to police but said if the bike was returned to Steven, that would be the end of the matter.
She added: "To see my son upset was very upsetting for me. I just want the bike back no questions asked.
"We live in a cul-de-sac and our house is the right at the top, so whoever took it had to come into Deyne Avenue specifically.
"It wasn't just a passer-by who spotted an opportunity. Steven does rely on the bike for school so please, just bring it back."
The bike was locked up with a chain when it was stolen from under the living room window, and the family have since reviewed their security measures.
