After taking Wycombe into the Football League in 1993, he guided Leicester to promotion in 1996, won the League Cup in 1997 and 2000 and finished in the top half of the Premiership in all four seasons he was in charge.

He was an instant hit at Celtic, winning the treble in his first season and taking them to the final of the 2003 UEFA Cup.
