IT is a little bit rich of the Labour Group leader in Bury to be calling for a Post Office in Bury when, in the same week, his party has axed plans to renew the £1 billion Post Office Card Account contract.
This means that thousands more post offices, which relied on the Card Account to bring customers onto their premises, will close.
The decision to abandon official support for the Post Office Card Account, despite the fact that more than four million people receive their benefits through the account, and which was only introduced in April 2003, is a betrayal of some of the most vulnerable people in society.
Despite Government promises to keep sub-post offices open except in unavoidable circumstances', New Labour has presided over the closure of more than 3,000 sub post offices. So, please Coun Campbell, save your crocodile tears for your party's ministers.
The people of Bury know what they want and the people of Bury know who is cutting these services.
COUN BOB BIBBY
Leader, Bury Conservatives
