RESIDENTS living on a 'death trap' road where two people were killed in just three years have repeated their calls for safety works after two more accidents.

In separate crashes on Stoneclough Road last week, one motorist smashed into a tree and another drove into the railway bridge.

Just two weeks ago, mum Ellen Newman, of Market Street, Stoneclough, was killed as a car mounted the pavement where she was waiting for a bus.

Paramedics rushed her to the Bolton Royal Hospital but she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Outraged residents blasted Bolton Council for not making the road safe after eight-year-old Billy Joe Dean was killed by a motorcyclist in 2002 as he walked along the pavement.

And the MP for Bolton South-east, Dr Brian Iddon, hit out at the council, saying he regretted the road had not been made safe and new signs not erected to warn motorists about the dangerous bends.

Council chief executive Bernard Knight answered residents' clamour for safety measures saying work would be done - but it could be up to a year away.

Lisa Loftus, who lives on Stoneclough Road, said more people will be killed before then.

She said: "On Friday of last week, two cars came off the road. Its frightening. You can hear the cars screech then . . . 'bang'.

"It is no comfort at all to the residents that work will be done in what might be 12 months time. More people will be hurt in accidents before then."

A council spokesman said there were more than 20 priority sites in the borough that needed work.

A police spokesman confirmed the latest crashes, saying: "One was a drink-driver and the other was to do with the driver's ability. No one was injured in the accidents, which were not linked in any way. You cant account for drink drivers."
