THIS is the first review I have ever written where I can't actually tell you much about the show - The Vagina Monologues was just too rude.
I'd heard friends rave about it, calling it the bible for all 21st century women, but I didn't know what to expect. I soon realised you had to leave your inhibitions by the door before taking your seat.
The show was created by award-winning playwright Eve Ensler and was based on more than 200 intimate conversations with women. They talked about relationships, sexual experiences, fantasies and their bodies as well as their hopes and aspirations. The stories were hilarious, witty, poignant, tragic, heartbreaking and some were quite frankly bizarre.
Former Atomic Kitten Kerry McFadden, Ellen Thomas who plays the secretary Liz in Teachers, and actress Jan Shepherd were fabulous. They helped to put the audience at ease, encouraged audience participation and improvised a lot too. I'm no prude but I'm sure people around me could feel the heat beaming from my face as I tittered behind my hand.
It was like being a member of a secret club as no subject was taboo for the narrators. It was very exhilarating to be honest.
But behind the laughter there was a serious message as some of the testimonials featured women's memories of child abuse and rape. My emotions were all over the place as I laughed until I cried one minute and felt desperately sad the next.
There were plenty of brave men in the audience and I hope more go to see it. They might learn a thing or two.
Anyway I'm off to find Bob, watch the show ladies and you'll know what I mean.
