IN reply to Mrs Smith (Thursday, January 19) most of us would not describe them as 'small' town centre cinemas - a town centre cinema had one large screen showing a programme of films.

The three I remember were the Odeon, the ABC on Churchgate, and the Lido on Bradshawgate.

When the Lido was altered it then had several small screens and was therefore less good, less of an experience, more claustrophobic. But at least it was within reach - only one bus ride.

Since this cinema closed down I have never been to the pictures at all, as all the complexes are hard to get to and to get back home from. This is what is meant by the 'loss of an amenity'.

We now have no public swimming pool, no cinema, no bowling alley, and no skating rink in the town centre. And these are places people want easy access to.

Travelling to Horwich or Astley Bridge involves catching two buses, some of which hardly run at night, or paying a huge amount for a taxi. The alternative is to walk!
