AN appeal for witnesses has been made after a pensioner was seriously injured in a robbery after a shopping trip to Prestwich.

The 79-year-old woman suffered a fractured skull and fractures to her arms and wrists after the street attack in Broughton Park, Salford, on Wednesday last week.

Police say she was approached from behind by a man when she was knocked against a gatepost, causing a large head cut. Her handbag and purse were stolen but were recovered later.

Earlier, she had been shopping in Kings Road, Sedgley Park, as well as visiting the nearby Lidl supermarket before catching the bus back towards Manchester.

The woman is said to be in a 'stable' condition in North Manchester General Hospital.

A police investigation into the incident is continuing and detectives are still keen to hear from any motorists or pedestrians who witnessed any part of the incident, which happened at a busy time of the day.

Any information can be passed to the CID at Salford on 0161 856 5361 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
