AN awards night proved to be a proud occasion for St John Ambulance Divisional Officer for Cadets, Eileen O'Neill.

For as well as seeing a number of her young cadets receive certificates for their efforts, her own daughter Helen (14) received the Grand Prior Award, along with Andrea West.

The Grand Prior is the highest award a cadet can achieve and follows an intensive course of 12 proficiency tests, a number of camps and a weekend away.

Former sergeant of the Prestwich Division, Andrea has now become an adult member and Helen has moved up to sergeant.

The youngster has also just been awarded Cadet of the Month for the county.

Mrs O'Neill, who has been in the St John Ambulance for 11 years, said: "Usually the cadets are awarded their certificates during their regular meetings so this was the first awards ceremony we have had in the three years I have been Divisional Officer.

"It was a successful evening and we hope to repeat it next year.

"It was a very proud occasion for me as they have all worked extremely hard and I am really pleased with Helen's achievement."

The certificates were awarded to the cadets by North East Area Commissioner, Moya Travis, for a variety of achievements, including proficiencies in drug awareness, accident prevention and duty hours service awards.

The group's newest cadets were also presented with membership awards.

The Prestwich Division meets each week at Our Lady of Grace RC Church, in Fairfax Road.
