AFTER the letters about the Odeon Cinema, I'd like to say a few things. I am in my early 20s, and I remember being taken by my parents to the old ABC on Bradshawgate when I was young.
To my memory it always seemed cramped, cold and smelly, and I didn't enjoy it very much!
But when the multiplexes arrived, it was like a whole new world. They had huge screens, surround sound, comfortable seats, proper lighting, and lots of room!
They were also cheaper and gave much more value for money - you could take risks even with films you weren't sure of, because the experience of going was such fun.
Some multiplexes even have play areas, party facilities and cafes. Even a modern small cinema couldn't compete with this.
The cinemas at The Valley and Middlebrook aren't really very far away, and there's a great choice of films.
You would have a better chance of being able to catch a suitable film on spec than you would at a small cinema showing only one or two films. At the multiplexes there are usually several showings, often on two screens at the same time, making it easy to plan.
Even if the Odeon re-opened, it would end up closing again in a couple of years, because everybody would still go to the two multiplexes instead.
