WHITEFIELD'S 200-year-old former town hall has been targeted by arsonists.
Passers-by spotted smoke coming from the boarded-up ground floor windows of the Georgian mansion at 5pm on Tuesday.
Officers battled thick fumes and flames to tackle the blaze. They retreated to safety when the burned ground floor collapsed into the basement. The building has been secured and police are investigating.
