BURY College is continuing to lead the way by offering a new range of basic sign language and deaf awareness courses.
The Disability Discrimination Act has determined that each business must offer a qualified signer where required, and Business Solutions, the college's training arm, are offering the courses which will enable businesses taking part to be prepared for Deaf Awareness week.
The Government's position on British Sign Language was set out by Andrew Smith, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. The statement recognises that signing is now a language in its own right. There are 8.7 million deaf or hard of hearing people in the UK which is the equivalent to one in seven of the population.
Bury College's next deaf awareness course starts at Business Solutions at Link House in Walmersley Road on February 2.
