JUST animal magic - that's the £1,777 raised with the help of Bury Lions club and Barclays bank to swell the coffers of the Children of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
The group, based at Bury C of E High School, has been raising cash over a number of years to fund wildlife and environmental projects at a national park in Kenya. It is run by environmentalist Daphne Sheldrick whose dedication was recognised when she was made a Dame in the New Year Honours List.
In 2004, the children visited Kenya and saw for themselves the work of Daphne and her team. On their return, they made a presentation about the trip to the Lions. Following a collection, the club decided to award £170 to the wildlife organisation. Earlier, the Lions had selected pupil and Trust member Ashleigh Rolling as their 2004 ambassador.
Last year, the youngsters held two canoeing sessions at the Burrs Country Park which raised £1,027. This was used to 'sponsor' Barclays employee Sandra Grange to canoe with the pupils so that the bank would match her sponsorship up to a total of £750 which took the total to £1,777.
