LEIGH CENTURIONS 6, WIGAN 34 by Mike Hulme: Tony Benson was left with mixed feelings as he saw his new Leigh side outgunned in a friendly against local rivals Wigan Warriors.

The Leigh head coach declared himself satisfied with many aspects of his team's play but felt that lapses in concentration let them down.

Wigan counterpart, Ian Millward, was the happier coach as he saw most of his close-season signings make their debuts. But it was the performance of Sean O'Loughlin, returning after a lengthy injury lay-off, who brought him most pleasure.

Benson was also pleased with some of his individual performances.

"Aaron Heremaia's effort was a huge plus for us, especially after Jules O'Neill pulled out through sickness.

"Defensively we were very strong at times but there were times when we switched off and got punished."

Conditions also played a part; a heavy pitch and driving rain hampering both sides.

Wigan got off to a flying start with two tries in the opening six minutes from Joel Tomkins and Danny Tickle but Leigh hit back impressively when Lee Greenwood showed blinding pace to score at the corner from a Scott Grix kick.

A try from Kevin Brown and Tickle's second goal made it 16-6 before half time but after the break Wigan were more dominant with further tries from Harrison Hansen, David Vaealiki and Wayne Godwin.
