THE site of a former Islamic college in Bromley Cross has been earmarked for a modern housing development.
Barratt Homes has submitted plans to build 86 properties comprising 70 apartments and 16 detached houses on the land in Hospital Road.
The development will mean the demolition of the former Institute of Islamic Higher Education and the removal of a number of trees.
The Islamic college is currently based in Willows Lane, Deane. It moved from its previous home on the site of the former Blair Hospital in Bromley Cross because it restricted any plans for expansion.
If the new plans are passed, the site will contain five, four-storey one and two bedroom apartment blocks and on-site car parking.
It will also have 16 detached houses with driveway parking and gardens.
Raymond O'Reilly, aged 38, of Hospital Road, said: "The site of the old hospital and college really needs developing and th new plans look tidy and nice.
"My main concern is the effect the increased traffic will have on an already busy road, but if the majority of the existing greenery remains alongside the new development then the site will definitely improve the look of the area."
A spokesman for Barratt Homes said: "Subject to receiving a satisfactory planning permission, the development will consist of apartments and detached houses, prices of which are yet to be confirmed."
