THE article in the Bolton Evening News (January 5, 'Drivers in the dark over road signs') made interesting reading but, although the statistics did not surprise me they did disappoint me.

In fact, the results would be much the same if the survey had been conducted in Bolton.

As a road safety organisation, Bolton Advanced Motorists is well aware just how many drivers on our roads have poor knowledge of the Highway Code.

Indeed, when we have conducted similar surveys on our local display stands (the results of which have often been reported in the Bolton Evening News), we find that the conclusions are much the same.

But it does surprise me that the 18-to-24 age group does not do a lot better than the over-55s, as this younger group must have gone through a much more thorough learning process to pass the DSA Theory Test.

Yet, in just a few years, much of what they learned has been forgotten.

The director of the motoring organisation www.motorinsurance.co.uk hit the nail on the head when he said that safe motoring relies on accurately identifying road signs and driving appropriately. He went on to say that all drivers could benefit from refreshing their knowledge of the Highway Code which is just what many drivers do when they join our courses.

There is no magic solution to some of the driving standards we see on the roads today, but anyone wishing to make sure that their driving is up to date could do no better than contact Les Wardle on 01204 361064 and ask for aninformation pack.

If you really want to check your knowledge, have a look at the Fun Quiz on our website www.boltoniam.org.uk first but no cheating!
