FLY-TIPPERS have dumped 500 tyres on the streets, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill.
Residents are being urged to report dumpers to the council which can then prosecute and drive the 'cowboys' out of town.
Councillor John Byrne, executive for environment and transport, said: "These dishonest individuals are collecting waste, pocketing the tipping fees and ruining the environment for the rest of us - it is appalling.
"They are leaving our streets littered with large amounts of flammable debris which could cause a serious hazard unless we remove it instantly. It is quite frightening."
Garages and tyre-fitting bays are urged to use reputable and licensed waste carriers and check that they possess waste transfer documents and receipts. Anyone with information can call environmental health, in confidence, on 253 5566.
