Wanderers have confirmed an interest in striker Matt Jansen, who was released by Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday, although he is just one of a number of possible targets being checked out during the transfer window.
Jansen, who has has already been linked with Everton and Manchester City, has struggled for form since suffering serious injuries in a motorcycle accident in Rome in the summer of 2002 and says the time has come for a new challenge.
"We have him on our list, without really doing anything more than that,"Allardyce said. "Because of our need, we have to consider everybody."
Allardyce, who has built a reputation for catching fallen stars, would hit the jackpot if he could help the 28-year-old recapture the form that once made him one of the most highly-rated strikers in the country.
"If we could resurrect Matt's career, it would be a good move for us and a very good move for him,"the manager added.
Jansen's availability could offer Wanderers the chance to let Jared Borgetti go. Portuguese giants, Benfica, are believed to be keen to sign the Mexican, who has been frustrated by a shortage of Premiership action.
Allardyce, who has lost El-Hadji Diouf to the African Nations Cup, is not prepared to let Borgetti go out on loan and will want to recoup the majority of the £1 million Wanderers paid Pachuca in August.
Even then he may decide he wants to keep hold of the player because of his lack of experienced cover in the attacking department.
Borgetti's agent, meanwhile, claims he has been contacted by Benfica, whose coach, the former Dutch international Ronald Koeman, is desperate to increase his goal power.
"Ronald Koeman has an interest in contracting Borgetti,"Eriberto Lopez said. "But Bolton will decide the future of the player. I will be speaking with the management at Bolton and we will analyse the offers on the table.
"Despite interest from Mexico, Borgetti would prefer to remain in Europe.
"He is very happy with the interest shown in him by Benfica. He would be very happy to deal with an important club and, if the transfer is confirmed, play in the Champions League."
