BOLTON School gave a rousing send-off yesterday to the town's sportsmen who will be competing for England in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games.
Water polo players, Andrew Crawford, Edward Scott and Sarah Pimblett, cyclist Amy Hunt, swimmer Anthony Howard, table tennis player Andrew Rushden and 3,000m steeplechaser Stuart Stokes have all figured in the sports pages of this newspaper. Now they have the chance to get national and multi-national recognition at one of the world's premier sporting events, which this year takes place in Melbourne in March (or, in the case of the water polo players, in Perth in a couple of weeks).
Bolton School, of which Edward and Sarah are current students and Andrew Crawford is an old boy, deserves credit for organising a magnificent lunch complete with speeches of best wishes and going away gifts to mark the achievement of the Bolton seven.
The occasion made these sportsmen feel like stars before they went. Let's hope they can perform like stars at the Games and bring us back a medal.
