THE funeral of a firefighter who was killed in a car crash in France just weeks before his retirement is being held on Friday morning.

Sub-officer Peter Stephenson, who lived in Radcliffe, was on holiday with his wife Shan last month, when his car was involved in a collision with a lorry near Calais. He died after sustaining a serious neck injury.

The 49-year-old officer was based at Crompton Way fire station in Bolton, and was in charge of the Green Watch. He was due to retire this month after serving 30 years. The popular firefighter will be honoured with a full brigade funeral.

A short service will be held at the station at 10.45am with a guard of honour, followed by committal at Overdale Crematorium.

Mrs Stephenson, who works in the control room at the fire brigade headquarters in Swinton, was not seriously injured in the crash.

She has spent 27 years in the fire brigade and was due to retire at the same time.
