KEVIN Glendon is hoping that the magic of the cup will inspire his team to victory over Fleetwood in Saturday's UniBond League Cup clash at the Lancashire seaside town writes Marc Higginson

It's been a disappointing season for the Boro with injuries and player upheaval leaving them struggling on the bottom rungs of the league but a good cup run will boost the club's spirits - and coffers!

"It's a great chance to bring some silverware to Radcliffe," Glendon said.

"The supporters were magnificent on Monday at Runcorn and I want to reward them with a cup victory.

"We will take each game at a time but there's no reason why it can't be done.

"I have a good set of players here and they all want to do well. Fleetwood are a good team and will be difficult to beat, though."

Glendon was pleased with the way his side stuck to their task in the 2-2 draw with Runcorn but was disappointed to only take one point out of the contest.

"I think we dominated the game and I'm always happy when we get points, but I think we could have had all three.

"We had most of the possession and I think we showed one of the league's form teams what we are capable of.

"I genuinely believe we are only two or three players short of being a very good team.

"We have the best goalscorer in the league in Steve Foster and Danny Hurst is certainly one of the best keepers.

"We are just short on numbers sometimes."

Tony Whealing was stretchered off with a nasty-looking injury against Runcorn, but Glendon says he has been lucky.

The manager said: "Tony has only got severe bruising. Considering how bad the tackle was, he has been very lucky.

"Tony is a quick healer anyway. If you look at his record, he very rarely misses matches and he will be back in training once the bruising settles down." In Tuesday's training session, Whealing, Gary Sampson, Jamie Miller and Stephen Hill all sat it out, leaving the boss with an anxious wait ahead of the trip to the seaside.

"Jamie Miller has work commitments anyway on Saturday but, if the other three don't make it, we are down to the bare bones," said Glendon.

"Adam Carden came on as a sub on Monday and really impressed. He worked hard and was very clever with some of his passing.

"It might be that we have no other option than to throw Adam and Chris Pauls in. Chris is another young lad we have brought in and he was on the bench on Monday."

Glendon also had words of praise for Andy Heald. Heald has been playing out of position as a striker during Boro's injury crisis and Glendon said: "Andy has been magnificent for me.

"He is not a natural striker and he's worked his socks off.

"When he switched to his natural position on the left wing after Tony's injury on Monday, he looked much brighter. I think it bodes well for the future that we have two very capable left-sided players."
