ROLY poly comedian Peter Kay's new fitness video has helped him gain a few pounds - while thousands of fans trying to beat the post Christmas bulge have shed a few after snapping up copies.

The Bolton funnyman has become an unlikely health hero for the nation with his DVD, The Power of Two, breaking the record for Britain's fastest-selling exercise DVD .

It has hit the top of the fitness charts following its release on Boxing Day.

The hilarious spoof sees Max and Paddy, the hapless bouncers from Phoenix Nights and Max & Paddy's Road To Nowhere, poke fun at celebrity fitness videos, while offering help to overweight men.

The star left other celebrities, who brought out fitness videos in time for Christmas, in his wake. An unprecedented 23,000 copies flew off the shelves in its first week of sale.

The previous record-holder was Big Brother host Davina McCall, with her Power Of 3, which sold 9,000 in its first week.

Kay, aged 32, who plays Max in the DVD, said: "I'm completely amazed at how popular it's been, but why can't people lose weight and have a laugh at the same time?"

Paddy McGuinness, who plays Paddy in the DVD, this week announced that he will playing a date at Hindley's Monaco Ballroom on February 23 as part of his first national, solo comedy tour, The Dark Side.
