A PETROL station in Farnworth will be allowed to continue trading for 24 hours-a-day despite complaints that it has become a magnet for crime.

The BP Garage on Longcauseway was granted temporary permission to operate as an all-night garage in October 2004, under a year long trial.

But neighbours claim the opening hours had caused an increase in vandalism and anti-social behaviour.

Resident Harry Whittingham, aged 50, of St Peter's Terrace, Farnworth, who has campaigned against the all-night opening, called the decision "an absolute whitewash"

Mr Whittingham said: "It's a magnet for kids. There are always groups of them hanging around the garage, drinking alcohol, taking drugs and urinating in the streets."

The trial period came up for review last month but a decision was deferred.

Planning officers had recommended refusal, but councillors went against their advice.

Salim Hasan, area manager for applicants Euro Garages Ltd, said: "I think it was the right decision.

"The reports we got showed that trading over night has not caused any problems in the area."

The council has imposed a condition of no petrol deliveries or car washes between 8pm and 8am.
