BOOKWORM Margaret Coleman found that the characters in her favourite book were very real indeed.

Margaret, stewardess at Turton Golf Club, fell in love with Remnants of a Youth Club - a true story of how five friendships formed and developed - and wrote to the publisher to express her compliments.

The women behind the book then got in touch, and developed a friendship with her.

Margaret, aged 48, said: "The book was written by three women from Burnley in memory of another friend who died from cancer. It was such a wonderful, touching book set in my era that I had to congratulate them.

"We've stayed in touch and they've been down to the golf club, where I actually live, for dinner a few times.

"They're wonderful girls and I would recommend the book to anyone."

The women, Carol Hawke, Christine Thornton and Kath Corday, who wrote the book under the pseudonym Alice Cachejeka, will be signing copies at Sweetens Bookshop in Bolton on Saturday at 1pm.
