THE slight disappointments experienced in the British Indoor Individuals were forgotten last Sunday when the Bury-Pedalsport lads retained their British Under-19 Indoor team championship at Fit-City, Broughton Recreation Centre, Salford.
Not only did they win but they won in style.
After a brilliant start, when they scored a magnificent 13 points out of a possible 16 from their first four heats from the least favoured grid four starts, they consistently dominated the proceedings and kept a firm grip on the championship.
All five riders were magnificent and there was just one change from last year's winning team, with Scot Jarman now too old.
His replacement, Mikey Hewittson from Edinburgh, rose to the occasion with a second and two race wins.
Skipper Ben Scranage clocked up a superb 16-point maximum and never looked as though he would be beaten.
Tom Doyle was in confident mood from a win and two seconds, while the two least experienced riders, Ashley Simpson and Chris Parish, added to the overall performance which showed none of the nervous stutter evident in the closing stages last year.
A special word of praise is due for Chris Parish who suffered an horrendous crash last week, resulting in a visit to hospital.
He was unsure of riding until late in the week, but his performance just added to the confidence evident throughout the team.
Bury PedalSport 52 - Ben Scranage 16, Mikey Hewittson 11, Tom Doyle 10, Chris Parish 8, Ashley Simpson 7.
Sheffield 41; Horspath, Oxford 38; Wednesfield, Wolverhampton 27.
Earlier in the day, in the open semi-finals, the Bury team were eliminated when they could only manage third spot.
Horspath 55; Wednesfield 47; Bury 29 (Neil Howarth 8, Ben Scranage 8, Scott Jarman 5, Mikey Hewittson 5, Tom Doyle 3); Astley & Tyldesley 27.
In the other semi-final, Tameside with 45, and Leicester with 43 qualified over Stoke 41, and Sheffield 27.
Horspath also retained the Open title with 45 points ahead of Wednesfield 39, Leicester 37, and Tameside 34.
