WITH only two rounds of the Dwyer Cup gone, just one team remains from Division One.
That team is Burning Desire B who, despite having to give a nine point start to Seedfield C from Division Three, managed to win 6-3.
Burning Desire A had to give a 17 point start to Holmar C from Division Five and, although they won the first set of the match, they found this handicap just too much and lost 7-2 on the night.
There were some close 5-4 results where the outcome of the match depended on the last set and both BGSOBs teams suffered.
None more so than Stand CC who were playing the Grammar School B team, where the home team had to win the last two sets of the evening to stay in the cup.
Chris Sutcliffe and Dave Jackson did just this to take their team through.
The Grammar School A team suffered a similar fate in their match against Maccabi C.
With their game poised at 4-4 and one set to play, Louis Samuels of Maccabi beat Barry Warburton to take the tie.
Wardle Con B had a ten point advantage over YMCA Sports and David Wattts was able to be Barry Walsh in the deciding set to give the tie to the League newcomers and they will be joined in the next round by their A team who had an 8-1 win over Seedfield F.
Holmar B, with a seven start, beat Elton Vale A. Elton Vale A won the first two sets of the match before Holmar came back strongly to take the next five making the last two wins for Elton Vale irrelevant to the final outcome.
Maccabi B join their C team in the next round courtesy of a 9-0 victory over Radcliffe CC from Division One, but the Maccabi A team had to concede their match when they were unable to field a team.
ELPM B also had a walkover against Ramsbottom B. ELPM D were 2-1 up against Elton Vale B, but Elton Vale won the remaining sets to take the tie 7- 2.
The Seedfield D and E teams are safely through to the next round after comparatively easy wins over Prestwich F and Holmar A respectively.
Two Division Two teams, Prestwich A and Bishops Road met with Prestwich A, winning over the two man team 8-1.
Claybanks 11 point start against Ramsbottom C was more than enough to see them through to a 7-2 victory and Shawfield C from Division Five with a seven point advantage were 6-3 winners over Carlton Club C from Division Four in a match where seven of the nine sets played went to three games.
Players are reminded that Shawfield TTC have to close their premises at 10pm and have asked that all their matches start at 7.15pm if possible, in order for them to be completed by that time.
If just one player could be present at 7.15pm, this would help an early finish. Thank you for your co-operation.
