CARERS take centre stage on Friday, December 2, with a series of events as part of a special awareness raising day.
The theme of this year's Carers' Rights Day is all about older carers and emphasises the need for them to take up pension credit entitlements.
Six million people across the UK look after a partner, friend or family member who cannot manage without their help. Such carers are missing out on £660m each year in unclaimed benefits.
Wigan Council's Community Development Worker for Older Carers, Marilyn Locke explained: "Older carers have additional and different needs to other carers. They are most likely to be caring alone, be in poor health themselves and are frequently isolated and therefore uninformed. As a result they often miss out on valuable benefits which could improve the impact that caring has on them."
Professionals from a number of different benefits and support agencies will be on hand to provide information and invaluable advice and support to carers and others who are interested all about what benefits and support might be available.
The advice stands will be at Claire House, Hindley and Ormerod House, Nelson Street, Atherton from 10am until 4pm on December 2.
Carers who are unable to attend can find out more by contacting Marilyn Locke or Jill Pettitt on 01942 705976.
