A PENSIONERS council flat was destroyed after his chip pan set alight.
The 65-year-old man forgot he had put the pan on and left the flat shortly before firefighters arrived at the scene in Crossmore Drive, Tonge Moor, at 1.15pm on Tuesday.
A workman, who was on site at the time, raised the alarm and evacuated nearby residents.
One woman was treated for smoke inhalation.
Ian Duckworth, station officer at Bolton Central, said: "We recommend people get rid of their chip pans and buy deep fat friers. If they do own a chip pan, never leave it unattended because the potential for fires is high."
The tenant is staying with relatives while Bolton Council organises alternative accommodation.
