IT is often said that the simple solutions usually prove to be the best. Well I believe that Tony McNelle has come up with a simple solution that could, if adopted, have a huge impact on our attitude to alcohol.
Tony suggests that Bolton should set a bye-law that makes it a public order offence to be out in public with more than a specified amount of alcohol in the blood.
Tony suggests that a benchmark of, say, ten units, should be set, for breathalising people on the streets, on public transport, and in the A&E depts of our hospitals.
I would go further and suggest that the police should go into pubs and clubs, and if anyone was tested and found over the limit, and still drinking, then the pub or club would have its licence endorsed.
Three endorsments and the pub or club would lose its licence to serve alcohol, for a set period.
Are we able to do this? Have we got anyone in the town ball with the bottle to try?
