SOCCER legend George Best is awake and "responsive" after being taken off sedation, but is still "desperately ill".
Professor Roger Williams, who oversaw the Manchester United and Northern Ireland star's liver transplant three years ago, said Best is "a fighter".
Best, aged 59, is not fully conscious and still on a ventilator, but the news is a "step in the right direction" he told BBC News.
