WORKERS at a Bolton tissue paper maker are waiting to hear about the future after their parent company was bought for £7.6 billion.

Georgia Pacific on Mansell Way, Middlebrook, which employs around 200 people, was acquired by private US industrial conglomerate Koch Industries in a deal the paper firm describes as "the biggest in our history".

Georgia Pacific, based in Atlanta, USA, has 55,000 employees worldwide, with annual sales of £10 billion.

The company's recent expansion into tissue paper - the main focus of the Bolton operation - had come under pressure as commercial customers were hit by rising fuel prices.

Last month, Georgia Pacific announced plans to lay off 1,100 of its workforce across the USA and Europe as part of efforts to reduce costs and match supply with demand, though details have yet to be announced.

Kansas-based Koch said that the acquisition would allow senior management to explore new avenues for sources of revenue.
