A 48-year-old woman lost her arm after being hit by a tipper truck on the East Lancs Road, Swinton, on Tuesday.

The pedestrian from Swinton was crossing the A580 at traffic lights near the junction of Worsley Road shortly before 2pm.

As the lorry moved away from the signals it hit her, causing serious arm and internal injuries.

She was taken to Hope Hospital in Salford, where she underwent emergency surgery to have her arm amputated.

The woman is said to be in a critical condition.

One lane of the westbound carriageway was closed for two-and-a-half hours following the accident, and the north-bound lane of Worsley Road was also closed near the Bluebell pub.

The driver of the Mercedes truck, a 52-year-old man from Shevington, was not injured.

An investigation into the cause of the accident has been launched by police.
