SCUNTHORPE 1 SHAKERS 0 (aet): Shakers' hopes of a lucrative FA Cup run were dashed when substitute Tommy Johnson grabbed his first goal for Scunthorpe deep into extra-time.
Almost immediately, Gary Flitcroft was sent off late on, seemingly for something he said.
Johnson's shot deflected past Bury keeper Neil Edwards just as a penalty shoot-out seemed inevitable.
Billy Sharp twice came close for the hosts and Ian Baraclough was denied by Edwards while Bury's Simon Whaley saw his shot bounce off Paul Musselwhite.
Scunthorpe now face a second round tie at Conference side Aldershot.
Shakers travelled with one of the club's biggest away followings of recent times, after directors agreed to fund five coaches for the journey to Glanford Park.
Chris Casper's side produced a stirring fight-back to earn the replay after going two goals down in the first game at Gigg Lane. A Tom Kennedy penalty, and a 70th-minute effort from Paul Scott earned the Shakers another crack at Scunthorpe.
