A BOLTON MP has defended his decision not to join the Labour rebels in voting against Tony Blair's proposals for a 90 day detention period for suspected terrorists.
The Prime Minister crashed to a humiliating defeat in the Commons on the issue before MPs instead voted to allow a 28 detention period.
But Dr Brian Iddon, MP for Bolton South-east, backed the Government and did not vote on the rebel 28 day amendment.
He said: "On balance, I am more concerned about the safety of 61 million British citizens than I am about a very small number of people who may be affected by this Bill, some of them probably not even British citizens."
