BURY FC: A superb rearguard action by backs-to-the-wall Bury brought home a point from Bramall Lane where they withstood tremendous pressure from promotion hopefuls Sheffield United.
For thirty minutes or so it was almost one-way traffic as John Forrest's goal came under fire but the agile keeper made some vital saves from Barry Butlin, John Matthews and Paul Garner.
TABLE TENNIS: The girls table tennis team from Prestwich's Parrenthorn High School won through to the finals of the national team competition of the English Schools' Table Tennis Association.
The four girl under-16 team consisted of Helen Frost, Beverley Hoyle, Susan Hoyle and Deborah Bowling.
BOXING: Bury Amateur Boxing Club members enjoyed a good night's competition at the Pontins Holiday Camp in Blackpool with three winners from four bouts.
Results were: Darren Sweatman beat I. Carmichael (Bamber Bridge ABC) on points; Peter Parrish beat D. Wilson (Bamber Bridge ABC) on points; Andrew Power beat T. Pinder (Fleetwood ABC) on points and Mark Barnes lost on points to D. Sumner (Bamber Bridge ABC).
LADIES HOCKEY: An extra time goal by their opponents Dunscar, cost Bolton Road Methodists the Cleworth Trophy as they went down 3-2 in a thrilling match.
The Bolton Road team was: Carol Barlow, Jane Bisson, Helen Hargreaves, Janet Taylor, Carol Booth, Judith Brown, Doris Heyworth, Susan Middlebrook, Jill Neville, Catherine Sutcliff and Susan Spencer.
DARTS: Joyce Rawlinson added the Bury Ladies' Individual title to her Bury Ladies' Pairs title and Bury Ladies' Mixed Pairs title at the Knowsley Hotel.
Joyce, who plays for the Church Inn (Bell Lane) was rated the best lady darts player the town has produced since Anne Westwood.
